The frog was wrong… it is easy to be green

Or at least so far it’s pretty easy!

Over the weekend, hubby and I had run into Walmart to pick up a few things for the weekend. I noticed a mesh tote bag for $5 and tossed it in the cart. Now that we go to soccer practice twice a week I needed a bag to hold our stuff (something other than a diaper bag). When we reached the register I told the cashier I would just put the other stuff we purchased into the big tote bag, not to bag it in the plastic bags. Hubby looked confused. Honestly, I was a bit confused too. This is totally not like me!

I must say it was a really cool feeling when I got to the car and just tossed my tote into the trunk. No sticky bags rolling around. I had everything in ONE tote… the cashier would have easily taken up three or four bags. Sooo….

Yesterday, when the girls and I went to the grocery store, I tossed a cooler in the trunk and my tote bag on my back. I was SO excited when I stepped up to the registers to find cloth reusable totes for 86 cents!! GO FOOD LION! I bought three of them. I was able to fit all of our groceries into the four reusable bags. I left the milk and juice jugs in the cart with no bag at all. Once we got to the car, we put the cold stuff in the cooler and headed home! I was surprised at how big these Food Lion bags were. They even had little mats to hold the bottoms flat and the bags open. I think they had more usable space than their regular bags, a bit more like using a paper bag.

The girls thought this was “sooo cool mom!” They don’t quite understand what makes it so cool, but they liked it. I can’t wait to go shopping again. I am a little concerned about showing up at Kroger with Food Lion bags. I guess I could get three from Kroger (if they have them of 86 cents!)

Now if I could just figure out exactly how I want to start the composting…hmmm….. something to think about today.

    She’s going green!
We don’t have a Food Loin here. I’ve seen similar bags at Wal-mart, (not At Kroger’s) but I hesitated to get some. Maybe I should do that.

It does feel awesome!!! I am kind of surprised to find out that I do have choices… I found out yesterday that I could opt to get my electricity from a “green” company through my regular electric company… of course it costs like TWICE what I pay now which I can’t afford to do yet, but it was awesome to know those options are there. In my research I found out that my electric company is trying to generate more of their electricity from renewable resources…. 🙂

I have some funky old fabric that my grandma gave me… very very retro looking stuff. I might make some more grocery bags on my own 🙂

    m~ I can’t believe Kroger didn’t have any… very disappointing…

I just found your blog and just had to congratulate you on going green at the grocery! How wonderful!

I’ve found totes at the Goodwill and while they weren’t meant for groceries — they worked out just fine. Several of them are the L.L.Bean totes with other people’s initials. That doesn’t bother me one bit!

    What a great post!

Thanks Lacy for stopping by! I totally need to start updating more often….

I found a fun place to buy bags if anyone is looking for bags made in the USA…. (I was a little disappointed but not shocked to find my new bags were from China…)

    check them out at

I just read your comment on my “Christmas Crafts” post and wanted to thank you. As you well know, the first weeks/months of blogging can be really discouraging — one works so hard to post and no one comments or reads.

Secondly (and perhaps most importantly), I wanted to comment about the people who laughed at your gifts that Christmas. I can’t tell you the range of emotions I felt when I read those words. How can people be so cruel and heartless? I am continually amazed. I am also very pleased that you continue to make gifts and give them to the side of the family that actually appreciates them.

Blessings to you for I am blessed by you!
