I have a dream….

There are moments in homeschooling that, when they happen, you totally forget the five hundred meltdowns over basic addition that happened the week before.

Yesterday we had one of those moments.

Happy Birthday Dr. King….

We had finished almost all of our work.  Social Studies is not a big part of our curriculum this year unless we stumble upon something that strikes her fancy.  However, there was a workbook page on MLK in her new book so I set her out to read about him and do the writing exercise.

Doodlebug: I don’t wanna read it.

Mom: It’s short, now come on.  Remember on the news this morning? It’s his birthday.

Doodlebug *stalling*: The [clip art] picture looks like Obama.

Mom: No, Obama is skinnier, now read.

Doodlebug: Fine.

****** about five minutes later

Doodlebug: Now what?

Mom: What is the assignment?

Doodlebug: to write sumthin..

Mom: Ok, read the question and answer it, you can do that.

****** do do do do do do do******

Here is what it said:

Do you have a dream for the United States?
Write an “I have a dream” speech of your own:

I have a dream…..

Here’s what she wrote:

Do you have a dream for the United States?
Write an “I have a dream” speech of your own:

I have a dream…..to be a fairy.

Ok, so we needed to talk, I know.
And we did.
We talked about kids and hunger and daddy’s with no job and all sorts of things that needed to change that were something she might would understand.
And after about twenty minutes she dictated to me her new dream…..

Doodlebug: I have a dream…. that everyone who is not dead would be healthy, and everyone everywhere would have the same things that everyone else has, only in different colors and in different ways.

Ya know, cuz we wouldn’t all want the same color shirt right?
