Power Protein Bars : A recipe for my hubby

SweeeetDaddyD likes to workout.  He chugs down some fruity supplements, all named something macho like MEGAMAN, NITRO, TESTO, OPTI-FLEXA-NANOVAPOROUS-GONNA-MAKE-A-MAN-OUT-OF-YA.  Then he tosses a couple kids up in the air, to show off warm up his biceps, and heads down into the garage for his workout.  Ipod in his ears, he ignores all of us until the end, when he hollers for me to come spot him for his “Skull Crushers”.

I love the new him…  he can move furniture with one hand so I can vacuum.  He no longer huffs and puffs (either in exhaustion or while whining) about loading and unloading the car for me after a trip to my moms house.  His posture is better, his attitude is better, and well…  them biceps ain’t looking too shabby either *wink*.

This new lifestyle has one hard side effect: he needs protein.  A LOT of protein.  This man could eat half a cow for dinner. 

I keep pickled eggs on hand for quick protein packed breakfasts for him.  He switched from regular yogurt to greek yogurt.  He started packing tuna and wraps for his lunches and packing protein bars for his snacks. 

Can I just say those protein bars are EXPENSIVE!  I made him wait until they were 10 for $10 at Kroger because I just could NOT spend that kind of money. 

But my baby was hungry.  He’s not happy when he’s hungry.  There had to be another option.

Homemade Power Bars…. yep, fancy granola bars…

I went to my favorite easy recipe site allrecipes.com and found Playgroup Granola Bars. After a few substitutions this is what I had:

Power Bars

Here is the list of ingredients from the original recipe (what I subbed out is in Purple):

2 cups rolled oats

3/4 cup packed brown sugar 3/4 cup chocolate whey protein shake mix

1/2 cup wheat germ 1/2 cup ground flax seed

3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 cup all-purpose flour

3/4 cup raisins (optional) added cranberries, raisins and pecans !

3/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup honey

1 egg, beaten

1/2 cup vegetable oil

2 teaspoons vanilla extract



I wrapped each one in a plastic wrap so hubby could just grab it and go!  He’s now shared it with some of his coworkers and I’m thinking I might be making a LOT more of these !

You can mix and match all sorts of goodies inside them!

    So far the only people that have not liked them were the ones who don’t like raisins. That includes me. Next time will be without raisins and more nuts.. maybe Almonds.
    and the macho names ? I love them, and pick on him about them daily!
